If that doesn’t work out…
Church planting is a cool thing to do. I agree with that 100%; however, if you are thinking of planting a church, you better have a better reason than that.  When a comment like “that didn’t work out - so now I will go and plant a church” is made - the person should probably reconsider.
Planting a church because it’s cool? - buy a new car…
…because it is exciting? buy a skydiving session and go jump out of an airplane…
…because you hate the one you’re in?  find a new one and invest your life there…
…because you want to be the “lead” pastor?  check your motives and make sure there is more to it than that…
We need more churches and we need more church planters. Just make sure that it wasn’t your idea. Make sure you were called to do it.  Then, answer the call - just make sure that is what you are answering.

Great post man. I couldn’t agree more. Too many dudes jump into planting because it’s trendy. What happens when it’s out of style or gets difficult?
Probably jump out as easily as you jumped in.

You hit the nail on the head. I know this guy who was an awesome Worship Pastor; he really knew what worship is all about but he wanted to be a senior pastor. When the senior pastor needed help and created a co-pastorship with the Discipleship Pastor, he was hurt. He planned to start his own church with the church’s blessing but his motivate were all wrong. The church supported him financially but only out of guilt and never truly supported him. Because he left hurt and with the idea of I’m the lead man now, the church has really hasn’t grown. Church Planting is a call, and a call I take very seriously. I prayed for months before Teresa and I surrounded to this. When I feel that I’m hitting my head against the wall, I know this is what I’m called to do so I look on the One who called me to it.
One thing to remember; we aren’t growing our church plants; God is the One who increases. He is the One who does; we are called only to follow. PEACE!
JR - linked from Shawn’s blog… this is a really great post and you are hitting right where i am right now…
I truly feel like God wants to use me to reach a University in my area that nobody is reaching (and i know EVERYONE says “nobody’s doing this/that” - but this time, i’m telling you, NOBODY is even attempting to reach these students). What I’m struggling with/listening for is what that actually means? Do we plant - go multi-site - am i just a freak with an ego that’s not being stroked enough? Thanks again for a great post.
By the way, Freedom’s website is really great - love it!! Peace and Chicken grease…
